A native of New York City, Tōshee studied design at Harvard under the late, great Toshihiro Katayama, internationally-acclaimed graphic designer, sculptor and painter. His professional name pays homage to his teacher, who passed away in January 2013.
Tōshee's mixed media work features carving and layering techniques inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock printing, sumi-e, cel animation and the constantly evolving North American streetscape.
Tōshee creates multi-layered compositions combining painted collage elements suspended in resin. The resin allows the viewer to visually excavate the piece by engaging it up close, revealing the sedimentation made up of pigments and solids.
