Out Migration Series
Pencil, pen, and thread on paper
8.5" x 6.5" x 1.5" framed
This is a series of small original drawings combined with hand- stitched thread and found objects.
All of these portraits honor and pay tribute to my ancestors. Elements of the past, present and future come to mind when creating each work. I reflect on the images, stories and narrative of my family to find comfort and guidance. For me I feel a need to use red thread in each work. The color red is a symbol of blood. Blood is the bond for all human life. Each piece is hand sewn using a stitch which was taught to me by my Grandmother. It is the only sewing stitch I know yet; I have found it useful my entire life. The stitches symbolize the connection between our past, present and future.
