The title of this painting, Samarkand, evokes a place of dream and antiquity. The desert landscape in the background is a particular spot in the Huntington Library Botanic Garden, in Pasadena. Several composite objects, part vegetable, part sexual organs, part ornamental vase, float in the foreground in symmetrical formation. It is a very surreal vision, reminiscent of the Max Ernst many paintings of gardens or jungles.
