After many years of painting landscapes, I have spent the last few years exploring abstraction. My process has always been to make marks on my support, then see what shapes are suggested, and develop those into a composition. I have continued that practice with these paintings while experimenting with different surface textures -- from smooth wood panel to very coarse-grained linen. Freeing myself from the horizon-line has forced me to paint with greater emotion, and use color more freely. I call the series “Pulling the Thread.”
