RECLINING BUDDHA
GILLIAN
Multi-Media Photography-Based Collage on Panel, Covered in Resin, Framed in an ornate raw wood frame
25" x 49" x 3" framed (24" x 48" x 2" unframed)
My reclining Buddha is female... Butterflies radiate from her body, symbolic of life, metamorphosis, rebirth and death. Her gaze is strong, but calm. She rests in a garden of delightful grass and flowers as the sun sits low in the sky. Is it rising or setting? Is this the end, or another great beginning? The piece plays off the traditional story of Buddha as well as the resurrection story, and beautifully gives a visual voice to the echoes we see of those who have passed in our lives as we continue to walk the earth without them. There is always a ripple effect from our interactions with people, places and things. New energies grow and dance and interact - nothing is separate from anything else.
