Because of its dozens of translucent layers of color, Ode to Philip Guston opens spatially to the viewer over time; the effect is similar to the film technique of tracking the camera backwards as the lens zooms forward. While many influences always inform my works, The Forest in Winter at Sunset by Theodore Rousseau is especially pertinent to this painting, with it’s glowing warm palette and its dramatic, almost shocking increase of depth and scale proportional to viewing time. Eccentricity and some Guston-esque forms and cartoonish space (Krazy Kat on acid) put this into the universe of an earnest tip of the hat to Philip.
