I earned my M.F.A. in Studio Arts at SFAI. At first glance, my painting and installation may seem childlike, simple and happy. Through playing with the boundary of superficial commercialized objects, I create conflict scenarios. Just as the Hello Kitty cartoon is an image distilled from the nuclear mushroom cloud, my saccharine scenarios allow me to work with larger themes of cultural conflict.
As a Chinese woman residing in a city with a legacy of discrimination, I possess an understanding of dislocation and cultural misunderstandings. I now find that I do not exactly feel a part of either country. I draw attention to the struggles that I’ve experienced such as not knowing where my home is and which group of people I belong to.
